Coding for other branches

If you failed to get CSE and is interested in coding do not worry. You can learn to code by your own with help of many websites and youtube channels and by taking help from seniors.

You can log on to hackerrank and hackerearth and start building your profile. All courses are free and can teach you from basics to advanced level. Practice whenever you get time. In 1st semester you can master C then move on to C++, Java, Python and more.

You can even get an internship in softemware field if you learn it on your oen also.
So start it right away if you are interested.

Branch change

Here at IIT BHU branch changing aspirants have much more opportunities compared to other IITs.
Its because here 50% of a batch can change their branch as compared to 10% in other IITs. But a branch's strength can be increased only by 10%. Also a minimum cpi of 8 is compulsory for a branch change.

Also here at IIT BHU we get 2 chanches of a branch change. One chance after 1st semester and other after 2nd semester. So you dont need to wait for a year. You can get it changed in half year too.

Example: If you are in chemical (it has 132 students) so 66 can change their branch and cse has 84 students so only 8 students can change into cse.

Tips for branch change
1) You need to be focused on your studies. You dont need to study as in JEE. You need to just revise whatever is taught in class and practice problems asked by professor or teaching asistants.

2) You should not miss classes. You must make notes in classes and be attentive.

3) You need to practice problems from the books recommended by professor.

4) Do all your assignments on time as they contain 10 marks.

5) Take practicals seriously as it has 20 marks. Do it carefully so that you score good in them. Viva is also there so revise well.

6) Respect your teaching assistants as they have control of assignments.

7) Do not waste much of your time in movies and games. Inste

8) To get a list of prescribed books and syllabus go to official website of IIT BHU.

All the best.

Hostel LAN and wifi

Once you get your id and password you can use the superfast LAN and wifi in the hostel. Its very fast. PUBG is banned on hostel wifi. Many other things are also banned. Dont try to use VPN to access them as you would get caught.
There are two lan ports in one room. You need to buy a lan wire and use it to connect your laptop with lan service.
You can use IIT BHU wifi on mobile phones too. So you will get all needed stuff there.
Also there are DC hubs and you can use them to access all shared content. Its like a Intranet service.
So enjoy your internet services here.

Do you need a laptop??

In 1st year there is not much need of a laptop but it is strongly recommended to have one if you want to learn coding. For C.S.E students its required always but for other branches it is required to learn coding on your own. C.S.E department professors motivate other branches to stsrt coding and guide them too. Seniors also help in it.
You should not do a bad use of laptop as many start gaming too much or watching many movies. Do watch movies and play games but when you are free. Never miss any classes as it is very important.
If you are interested in coding you can start it right away by using hackerrank, hackerearth and others.
Have command on C, C++, Java, python and others. It will help you in getting good opportunities in non core placements

Induction Programme

After your admission you will start your induction programme of 5 days.
In this you would daily be waking up at  5a.m. then going to Gymkhana ground and play till 7:30. Then at 9 a.m you need to go to Swatantrata Bhawan for a speech and then departmental visit.
